Project Description
Ala Spit lies on the northeastern shore of Whidbey Island and has been identified as a location for restoration due to increased erosion and habitat loss resulting from the installation of a rip-rap revetment in the mid-1960's. Increased erosion has resulted in a thinning and oversteepened beach profile reducing sediment input to the spit's pocket estuary and loss of nearshore habitat.
The Ala Spit's pocket estuary is located less than three miles from the Skagit River delta which provides valuable habitat for migrating juvenile salmonids (Beamer et al. 2005). The pocket estuary provides important rearing habitat for ESA listed Chinook and other salmonid species (Beamer 2007). The WRIA 6 Salmon Recovery Plan (adopted by Island County in 2005) describes Ala Spit as a pocket estuary accessible as salmon habitat. The Salmon Recovery Plan values the Ala Spit nearshore and pocket estuary areas as high protection priorities for juvenile salmon and a very high protection priority as forage fish spawning habitat.
Removal of the riprap will expand forage fish spawning habitat and will result in an increase in the topographic and ecological complexity of the pocket estuary. A long-term improvement in large woody debris recruitment is also expected.
This project addresses a priority action (i.e., preservation of habitat for Chinook and other salmon species), occurs in a priority area (i.e., pocket estuary accessible to Skagit River juvenile salmon), and target priority fish species (i.e., Skagit Chinook salmon).
