    Project Description
The Entiat River Foreman Floodplain Reconnection Project will increase habitat diversity and off-channel rearing and refuge opportunities for juvenile steelhead and spring Chinook salmon on the lower Entiat River between RM 2.7 and 2.3 where the construction of two levees has resulted in the channelization of the main channel and disconnection of adjacent floodplain. The project was identified through the US Bureau of Reclamation’s Keystone Canyon Project Floodplain Features and Alternatives Report (USBR 2007) and their Tributary Assessment studies on the Entiat River (USBR 2009). The proposed action is to selectively remove 325’ of existing levees to reconnect flood flows to a 5.4-acre forested floodplain habitat and deepen an existing wetland/swale to create 1100’ of side channel habitat. The project will meet the biological goal of increasing floodplain connectivity and off-channel refuge and rearing habitats, and should lead to improved salmonid abundance and productivity for multiple ESA-listed species. This addresses Tier 1 habitat restoration as recommended in the Biological Strategy (UCRTT 2008) and Recovery Plan (UCSRB 2007) for the Entiat River. The lower Entiat River is a Category 2 watershed in the Entiat Subbasin, which contains major spawning areas for ESA-listed spring Chinook salmon and steelhead, and is a bull trout core area. The USBR is undertaking an Alternatives Evaluation at the project site in 2009. CCNRD expects to secure all necessary permits and complete project construction by September 2010.
