Cornet Bay Shoreline Areas 4, 6, and 7 Restoration
The project area is the shoreline area beginning about 320 feet southwest from the Marine Maintenance Facility Dock stretching to about 50 feet north of the boat launch at Cornet Bay in Deception Pass State Park. The total linear feet of beach treated is 820. The project activities include removing the creosote wood bulkhead and associated fill and restoring the beach’s natural grade and composition. The south side of the entrance of the boat launch will require replacement of the existing bulkhead with shorter concrete bulkhead to address infrastructure protection. The rest of the project area will be restored to a natural beach profile, with riparian planting and strategic placement of large woody debris to increase habitat value. This project will expand upper beach habitat, remove creosote contamination, as well as improve forage fish and salmon habitat.
Engineering will be completed by Whidbey Island Conservation District staff. Permitting is already underway with the assistance of State Parks staff and staff from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
