    Project Description
The Suquamish Tribe will use grant funds to remove anthropogenic (cut) wood from 1.5 acres at Doe-Kag-Wats marsh to improve estuarine marsh conditions. Doe-Kag-Wats is located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation located approximately 1.5 miles east of the town of Indianola in north Kitsap County. Cut wood removal is expected to 1) increase the area occupied by native marsh vegetation and overall marsh primary productivity; 2) increase the volume of tidal water exchanged with Port Madison Bay; 3) improve habitat conditions for rearing salmonids; and 4) increase prey abundance for rearing salmonids. A secondary goal is to document the benefits and risks of anthropogenic wood removal as a restoration strategy in estuarine marshes in Puget Sound. This project will benefit listed Puget Sound Chinook salmon, chum, coho, and pink salmon, and coastal cutthroat trout. The site is for tribal cultural, spiritual, and subsistence purposes. Except during the period of log removal (about one week), the Tribe does not expect that this project will exclude or negatively impact recreational uses. This project targets the number one identified nearshore process that is a limiting factor for salmonids and salmonid forage species in the West Sound Watershed: loss and degradation of saltwater marshes. This project will improve saltwater marsh function for multiple salmon (both listed and non-listed) species. Project deliverables will include a baseline pre-project survey, post project survey, and monitoring & adaptive management plan.
