Carpenter Creek Estuary Acquisition

Great Peninsula Conservancy proposes to protect approximately 55 acres of Carpenter Creek estuary and riparian habitat. GPC will acquire a conservation easement over 35 acres and fee ownership of 20 acres to protect 95% of the estuary and its surrounding undeveloped, forested shorelines, salt marshes, freshwater wetlands and riparian habitat on three properties. Located near Kingston on N Kitsap peninsula, Carpenter Creek estuary is identified as a key pocket estuary for juvenile salmon because of its location along the migratory route to the Pacific ocean. It is one of the few remaining intact, undeveloped, forested, intertidal embayments in South Central Puget Sound. Beach seining by the Suquamish Tribe and WDFW indicates a diverse range of salmonids (ESA listed chinook, pinks, chum, coho and cutthroat) and high numbers of forage fish in the estuary. Stillwaters Environmental Center will continue to engage school children and the larger community in monitoring the estuary.
