Kitsap County will conduct this assessment project to summarize existing information on the status of habitats and population in the East Kitsap Demographically Independent Population (DIP) of Puget Sound Steelhead O. mykiss. This assessment will encompass the entire East Kitsap DIP from Foulweather Bluff in the North, to the Tacoma Narrows in the South, including all freshwater lowland streams in the geographic area. Sources of information for the assessment include the WRIA 15 Limiting Factors Analysis (Haring, 2000), temperature and water quality (various sources), and smolt trapping and the extensive watershed inventory (water typing) recently conducted by Wild Fish Conservancy. Fish use and relative abundance by sub-watershed will be developed and further refined through the water typing work referred to above.
This information is not available to steelhead recovery planners at this time. The existing Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan does not include freshwater habitat because there are no natal Chinook on the Kitsap peninsula. This project will provide the basis for the development of a recovery plan for the East Kitsap DIP of Puget Sound steelhead. The West Central LIO has identified this project as a "near term action" for the Puget Sound Partnership Action Agenda.
