Feeder Bluff and Armor Removal Assessment Project

This project will populate the PSNERP/ESRP projects portfolio with feeder bluff restoration projects aimed at restoring the sources of degradation and sediment supply to shoreline process units in Island and East Jefferson Counties. This is a pilot project employing a three-phase approach to achieve a list of ‘ready to proceed’ feeder bluff restoration projects. First will be a technical analysis of existing data on feeder bluff parcels designed to identify and prioritize bluff restoration sites with the highest potential to restore processes. These sites will be sorted by restoration priority and by landowner (public, commercial, or private). Phase two will implement project development activities designed to reach out to landowners in high priority areas to increase awareness of coastal processes and encourage the consideration of alternatives to armoring to establish landowner willingness for armor removal. The third and final phase will be the production of 3-4 conceptual designs for feeder bluff restoration projects in high priority areas that will restore sediment supply to shoreline process units and have landowner willingness. These projects will be ready for final design and implementation. Additionally, the project will produce a longer list of potential projects to restore sediment supply ready for entry into the PSNERP project portfolio.
