Polnell Point Armor Removal
|
NW Straits Marine Conservation Foundation will remove approximately 1,400 linear feet of shoreline armor from the tombolo located adjacent to Polnell Point Road, Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island. Fill will be removed to decommission the road prism and restore cross shore tidal exchange and two derelict creosote treated pilings will be removed from the west side of the project area. Following armor removal, the site will be re-vegetated with dunegrass and other species commonly seen on spits and tombolos to provide sediment stabilization and habitat benefits including insect fallout and leaf litter input. The project will enhance forage fish spawning habitat for Pacific Sand Lance and surf smelt, which will in turn support Puget Sound Chinook, chum, coho, and pink salmon. The full project proposal includes all phases from feasibility and design, permitting, final design, project bidding, construction implementation, and vegetation management. The design portion of the project is contracted through RCO-project 20-1146.
